6 Tips for a successful headshot

A little preparation will pay off in getting a headshot you’re proud to put everywhere.

  1.  Focus.  Don’t think about the meeting you just came from or how busy your afternoon schedule is. To connect with your intended audience you first have to connect with the camera so try and be totally present.  Zin.
  2.  Men should get a haircut about a week before the shoot and women whenever they are happiest with their hair after it’s styled.
  3.  Don’t forget accessories like jewelry and jackets and a few extra ties.  I’ll help pick the best ones.
  4.  Think of 1-3 words that you want your headshot to convey that you can focus on during the shoot.  Some examples could be approachable, confident, dependable, fun, outgoing, etc.
  5. In general wear long sleeves and solid colors of medium to dark tones to draw attention to the face.  Avoid exaggerated V-necks and turtle necks that completely cover the neck.  Wear what you feel comfortable in, even if it doesn’t fit these rules.
  6. Make up.  Try to apply make up in natural light.  Always start with less make up and bring it with you as what the camera sees is different than what the human eye sees.  For the same reason it’s a good idea to bring a few different shades of lip color.  Avoid glosses as they create too much shine.  Natural colors that enhance the tone of your lips tend to look best. Professional make up sessions aren’t necessary but they do make for an extraordinary headshot.  We can set it up for you at the studio with the areas best MUPs (Make Up Professionals).
